BLACK HISTORY/LUNAR

NEW YEAR

UNITY PAPER QUILT PROJECT

Black History – Lunar New Year “Unity Paper Quilt:
During the month of February, the square tech training interns explored those who fought for justice and equity. We started with understanding the history of both and the importance. Each intern designed a paper quilt that describes someone who is influential in their life. The Square Tech interns researched individuals that lifted their voice to help them and others. Then, our Square Tech interns created their paper quilt by drawing, building their design and wrote why they choose that individual. There design was turned into one large paper quilt and video. The creation of a quilt made of individual, diverse squares provides a metaphor for one unified community. Just as the students’ individual families are diverse and unique when looked at in isolation, they all contribute to their community when woven together. As their squares are placed together, just like a quilt, it helps to represent acceptance, tolerance and unity. Students learn about each other’s unique qualities, share their own backgrounds and families with pride, and learn how each diverse square can be joined together to represent inclusion and unity. When the quilt is hung in a place
of prominence, it will provide a visual reminder of that unity.

From these drawings I created a Video and a mural of the beautiful Unity Paper Quilt.
